Mirissa, another popular beach south of Sri Lanka, in between Galle and Tangalle is a nice small bay with a sea safe for swimming. Just like its beaches, Mirissa is the best place to go to Indian Ocean in search of Blue Whales as the continental shelf is situated very closer to the shore.

Mirissa’s neighboring beach of Weligama is famous for is stretchy beaches dotted with palm trees, a true picture post card type authentic beach destination. Fishing villages, local culture and seafood makes Weligama a must visit beach. Weligama Bay is very popular among the surfers as it blessed with that fine surf breaks for pro amateur surfers.
The area is also well-known for its stilt fishermen, who erect a single pole in the chest-deep water on the beach, just few meters off-shore, where they rest on on a cross bar and using bamboo fishing rods shed their lines out beyond the surf break to catch small fish. One of the most photographed item in Sri Lanka.
Weligama is known for its beeralu lace-making. Introduced by the Portuguese in the 16th century lace-making has remained a traditional handicraft along the coastal area of Weligama, with a number of households producing lace.
